Like Frodo naïvely offering the One Ring to Galadriel, unaware of the dangers of unleashing the full extent of her powers upon the world, Marvel has a role for Cate Blanchett in its upcoming Thor sequel. Variety reports that the studio is in early talks for the Oscar-winner, recent SAG and Golden Globe–nominated Carol star to play one of the new female leads in the film, titled Thor: Ragnarok. The details of the character aren’t confirmed, though rumors surrounding Ragnarok have indicated that it could introduce a new female superhero, Valkyrie, and possibly a new villain, Enchantress. Either character would be a perfect fit for Blanchett, as she has statuesque Nordic features, experience playing powerful mythological beings, and — let’s face it — has a deep connection to powers beyond human comprehension. Directed by Flight of the Conchord’s Taika Waititi with a script from Stephany Folsom, Thor: Ragnarok will hit theaters November 3, 2017. Maybe this time, Chris Hemsworth won’t be the most stunning Australian in the cast.
