When Donald Glover left NBC’s cult-favorite comedy Community to pursue his music career as Childish Gambino, fans were distraught. Glover has serious comedic chops — acute sense of timing, deft control of tone, and an inexplicable likableness. Now Glover is eschewing his musical moniker (for the moment) and focusing on Atlanta, a half-hour comedy show for FX, which he created and stars in. Speaking at the Television Critics Association, Glover said, “I just always wanted to make Twin Peaks with rappers.†The series concerns Earnest “Earn†Marks, who returns home to, duh, Atlanta, where his brother becomes a rap star. “Television shows are like novels,†he went on. “You just got to invest in them. The tone of this, it’s going to take people time to figure out what’s going on, which I think is a good thing.†The first episode doesn’t feature any appearances from Log Ladies or evil entities named BOB, but there’s still time.
