Danny Boyle got turned down by David Bowie before it was cool. Boyle had solicited Bowie to contribute a song to the film’s soundtrack, but Bowie, being Bowie, said, “Nein! It’s mine!†As Dazed reports: “According to former EMI A&R Tristram Penna, who helped compile the film’s seminal soundtrack, Boyle and his producer Andrew Macdonald ’[told] me of the difficulties they were having in clearing tracks for the film — David Bowie had turned them down for example … Andrew and Danny were desperate for Bowie — if memory serves, [they wanted] ‘Golden Years’ for the toilet scene (Brian Eno’s ‘Deep Blue Day’ was ultimately used).’†They did, however, end up using Iggy Pop’s “Lust for Life,†off the album of the same name that Bowie produced, and Brian Eno’s “Deep Blue Day†for the toilet scene. Bowie would later turn Boyle down again when Boyle asked him to perform at the 2012 Olympics. Yikes.
