Destin Daniel Cretton’s 2013 feature Short Term 12 focused on the lives of staff members in a residential treatment facility (and gave Brie Larson her breakout role). Now, with the help of Creed’s Ryan Coogler and poet Chinaka Hodge, Cretton will tell the stories of children caught in the system once again. The trio have put together a pitch for a TV series called Minors, which will be set in juvenile-detention facility and based on their personal experiences (Cretton worked in residential foster care; Coogler worked in a juvenile-detention facility; Hodge worked as a teacher for underserved youth). The show will depict how these facilities shape kids’ lives over the span of a year — think Short Term 12 meets Orange Is the New Black meets the fourth season of The Wire. The project’s been shopped around with the help of producer Charles D. King’s diversity-focused media company. Nobody’s bought it yet, but with that pitch, it can’t be long.
