Titan of the television industry Shonda Rhimes gave her first TED Talk to discuss her yearlong experiment when she decided to say yes to everything. (All of this is helpfully detailed in her book, Year of Yes.) Saying yes to things like her kids, her body, and speaking engagements was what helped Rhimes get her hum back — that is, the magic of working and feeling everything click. She was burned out and didn’t feel inspired like she used to. Not to worry: In less than 20 minutes, she relays how she underwent such a transformation and got her groove back. “A dream job is not about dreaming. It’s all job, all work, all reality, all blood, all sweat, no tears. I work a lot. Very hard. And I love it,†Rhimes says. “For me my work is at all times, building a nation out of thin air, it is manning the troops, it is painting a canvas, it is hitting every high note, it is running a marathon, it is being Beyoncé. It is all of those things at the same time.†Oh, how we’d like to be Beyoncé.
