What’s New on Amazon Prime: April 2016

At the beginning of (and throughout) every month, Amazon Prime and Amazon Instant Video add new movies and TV shows to their libraries. Some of these may also have previously been on Amazon, only to have been removed and then added back. For more comprehensive coverage of the best titles available on Amazon and elsewhere, check out Vulture’s What to Stream Now hub, which is updated throughout the month.

You know, that’s just like your opinion, man: The Big Lebowski (1998)

What more could you want from the Coen brothers than this delicious romp across Los Angeles, with Nihilists and Nazis and Jesus in tow? Sure, sure, you might want the intricate despair of No Country for Old Men or the Midwestern goodness of Fargo, but some days, just give me a White Russian, a bowling ball, and Lebowski. That’s bliss. Available April 1.

Plastic love: Lars and the Real Girl (2007)

As the titular Lars, Ryan Gosling, a surprisingly convincing dope, strikes up a relationship with a sex doll. As the tale unfolds, Lars’s relationship with “Bianca†seems to become increasingly more real — like Harvey, but set in the Midwest and with more doll sex. Emily Mortimer stands out as Lars’s pregnant sister-in-law, blending her adult seriousness with a very real sense of compassion. Available April 1.

Cyber love: You’ve Got Mail (1998)

Nora Ephron transports Ernst Lubitsch’s The Shop Around the Corner (itself based on a play) into the digital age with the tale of rival bookstore owners who carry out a courtship through email. Like many Ephron films, You’ve Got Mail presents a rose-tinted view of New York, where everyone lives in roomy apartments, eats well, and chats about Jane Austen in their spare time. Still, Ephron’s cutting wit and sense of human fallibility cut through the fantasy, while Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan remain as appealing as ever. Available April 1.

Before Fury Road: Mad Max (1979)

George Miller’s first installment in his post-apocalyptic saga finds Mel Gisbon’s policeman wandering a desert wasteland. It’s not as gruesome as Fury Road, but there’s still the a good blend of gangs, leather jackets, mohawks, tricked-out cars, and all the action you could need. Available April 12.

The one Amazon wants you to watch: Catastrophe (Season 2)

Last year’s breakout transatlantic rom-com is back with a time-jump and more lil’ baby catastrophes. Still, Rob Delaney and Sharon Horgan’s chemistry is strong as ever, and Carrie Fisher is back in the (same) building (as the other characters). Do we want more episodes of Catastrophe per season? Yes, we do! Are we happy with this regardless? Yes, we are. Available April 8.
