When pop stars write so-called “Feminist†anthems, do they consider the complex, and often divided, history of feminist thought? That’s what this SNL digital short ponders. The answer: “This is not a feminist song / We tried real hard but it took too long,†which is as good a reason not to turn your song into a political declaration as any. Of course, rebelling against the strictures of any confining doctrine could be construed as a feminist act. Or maybe it couldn’t. That’s not something we’re going to decide here.
