HBO Officially Renews Game of Thrones for Season 7

Though the evidence confirming future seasons of Game of Thrones was already nearly as clear as the evidence that Jon Snow is alive (wake up, people!), HBO has officially renewed the fantasy series for a seventh season. Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have discussed closing the series with shortened seventh and eighth seasons, but HBO has not confirmed the length of the upcoming season. That, as always, will require another reveal. Typically, a season would cap out at 10 episodes, but Benioff and Weiss have said they’re considering running seven episodes next year and six the year after, in the style of the final seasons of Mad Men, The Sopranos, and Breaking Bad. Network president Michael Lombaro, meanwhile, has said he’s comfortable running Game of Thrones for as long as possible, because why not? In addition to GoT, HBO renewed Silicon Valley and Veep for fourth and sixth seasons respectively, ensuring that Selina Meyer will stumble her way into various political offices of some sort, while Pied Piper will continue to be not that great at building a successful start-up.
