Following the fatal shooting of The Voice singer and YouTube star Christina Grimmie, those closest to her in the music industry have come to her family’s aid. Over the weekend, Grimmie’s manager Brian Teefey, who is also Selena Gomez’s stepfather, started a GoFundMe page to raise money, calling Grimmie “like a second daughter to me.†The goal was $4,000; it has since exceeded $120,000 in just two days. On Saturday, Gomez shared a story during her concert in Miami about her family signing Grimmie, who used to sing backup for Gomez, when the late singer was 14. She continued: “One thing about Christina and her family, is that she holds her faith so closely to her. It’s not about her religion, and it’s not about good deeds. It’s just that she had faith. And I don’t really understand how this happened, but I would like to dedicate this next song to her.†Gomez then paid tribute to Grimmie with a tearful performance of “Transfiguration†on piano.
