John Oliver Calls the RNC a ‘Four-Day Exercise in Emphasizing Feelings Over Facts’

Last Week Tonight returned to HBO last night just in time to take a look back on last week’s Republican convention, which John Oliver perfectly describes as “a four-day exercise in emphasizing feelings over facts.†Using examples from RNC speakers like Antonio Sabato Jr., Rudy Giuliani, and Newt Gingrich as well as factual claims by Donald Trump himself, Oliver makes the undeniable case that truthiness has completely taken over the Republican party in ways that are extremely scary should Trump win the election in November. “I think we can all agree that candidates can create feelings in people, and what Gingrich is saying is that feelings are as valid as facts. So then, by the transitive property, candidates can create facts, which is terrifying, because that means someone like Donald Trump can essentially create his own reality. And that is the closest thing to an actual magic spell I think I’ve ever seen.â€
