For the Weeknd’s latest charitable cause, he’s putting his money where his mouth is: Last month, Abel Tesfaye publicly tweeted his support for Black Lives Matter amid outrage over the police killings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile. Now he’s donating $250,000 to the activist organization, his reps have confirmed to The Fader. While based in the U.S., the BLM network has a chapter in the Weeknd’s hometown of Toronto. His collaborator Beyoncé, as well as Jay Z, previously donated a portion of $1.5 million to BLM via Tidal on what would’ve been Trayvon Martin’s 21st birthday earlier this year. (They were also said to have bailed out BLM protesters and privately funded the movement before going public with their support.) Over the weekend, the Weeknd also donated $50,000 to the University of Toronto to create an Ethiopian-studies program.
