Director Kelly Reichardt excels at making critically acclaimed contemplative movies about the inward journey, like Meek’s Cutoff and Wendy and Lucy. She also excels at making movies that star Michelle Williams, who played the leading role in each of those films, and reunites with Reichardt now for Certain Women. It has the Reichardt signature of a very brief synopsis that belies the emotional weight of her films, as it is simply about three women — played by Williams, Kristen Stewart, and Laura Dern — whose lives “intersect in small-town America, where each is imperfectly blazing a trail.†The movie debuted at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year to near-universal praise, and is based on the short-story collection “Both Ways Is the Only Way I Want It†by Maile Meloy.
