Germany, the country we have to thank for the continued relevance of David Hasselhoff, is not known for its comedy. And yet, Maren Ade’s comedy Toni Erdmann has managed to earn raves since it premiered at Cannes, becoming Germany’s selection for the Best Foreign Language Oscar race. The film centers on a self-serious daughter, Ines; her goofy father, Winfried; and Toni Erdmann, the “life coach†her father dresses up as sometimes for reasons that aren’t totally explicable.
