Amy Adams is tired of being asked about why there are too few roles for mature women in Hollywood, and she’s damn tired of herself and other actresses being the poster girls for income inequality in the industry. Adams was, of course, in American Hustle, the movie that became the subject of much chatter after the Sony email hack revealed a ridiculous disparity between what the women in the movie were being paid compared to the men. It’s the picture that prompted Jennifer Lawrence to write her now-famous letter about the Hollywood wage gap and how women need to demand more. But in this year’s Hollywood Reporter film actress roundtable — which included Adams, Isabelle Huppert, Annette Bening, Taraji P. Henson, Natalie Portman, Naomie Harris, and Emma Stone — Adams made it clear the money question is being directed at the wrong people. “Who you should be asking is the producer roundtable: ‘Do you think minorities are underrepresented? Do you think women are underpaid?’†said Adams. “We are always put on the chopping block to put our opinion out there, and that question is never asked. I’m like, ‘Why don’t you ask them and then have their statements be the headlines in the press?’ I don’t want to be a headline anymore about pay equality.†So henceforth, direct your money questions to the people holding those purse strings.
