Just because Justin Timberlake worked on the movie Trolls does not recuse him from going full Inside Out (where you cry so hard in a movie your kid loudly asks you what’s wrong) while watching the finished product. Timberlake co-stars in the film, wrote its hit song “Can’t Stop the Feeling†and executive-produced the movie’s soundtrack, but it was his own cover of Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors†that finally made JT pull a Toy Story 3 (where you weep like a silent waterfall behind your 3-D glasses). “True Colors’ [is] a beautiful song, and it’s a huge emotional moment in the film,†Timberlake told the crowd at Deadline’s Contenders film event yesterday. “And so I’m watching it and I’m like, ‘Am I … crying? At myself?’ I thought my only opportunity to do that was like a bottle of Jack Daniel’s and a mirror!†On the one hand, ha ha. On the other hand, as every kids’ movie since Up would suggest, isn’t the point of modern children’s films to make their adult guardians stifle their heaving sobs with mouthfuls and mouthfuls of popcorn? That’s why they sell the popcorn in the first place.
