Good news, rough necks! A Starship Troopers reboot is actually in development, with Baywatch movie writers Mark Swift and Damian Shannon being enlisted to pen a fresh take on the story from sci-fi author Robert A. Heinlein. Obviously, the studio hopes a new Troopers would “relaunch a potential franchise,†but as The Hollywood Reporter points out, the new movie is not meant to be a remake of the Paul Verhoeven cult classic from 1997 — which took liberties with the story and had that unmistakable campy extravagance of earlier Verhoeven films — but instead present a new take on Heinlein’s original novel. And that’s pretty much exactly what happened with the Len Weisman-directed Total Recall from 2012, which was more a reimagining of the movie’s source material, a short story by Philip K. Dick called We Can Remember It for You Wholesale, than it was a recreation of the 1990 movie, which was also directed by Verhoeven. No one involved in the 1997 Starship Troopers is currently affiliated with the new project, but we’ll at least be hoping for cameos from Denise Richards, Dina Meyer, and Casper Van Dien.
