The American religion that is capitalism allows a very small percentage of its citizenry to get rich, and that very small percentage is … now part of Trump’s cabinet. In Tuesday night’s A Closer Look segment, Seth Meyers dove into these picks head-first, attempting to reconcile the Donald “I don’t like rich people†Trump of the campaign trail with the guy who has assembled a cabinet worth $14 billion collectively. Meyers focused on a few names, like secretary of State pick and Exxon executive Rex Tillerson (“I guess when they drained that swamp there was oil at the bottomâ€), whose connections to Putin inspire a bit of an eyebrow raise, to say the least. He also dealt with Carly Fiorina (can’t say Shaq properly; up for director of National Intelligence), Rick Perry (glasses wearer, Energy secretary); and Steven Mnuchin, a former Goldman Sachs banker who is set to be Treasury secretary and who also ran a bank that once foreclosed on a 90-year-old woman who accidentally underpaid her mortgage by 27 cents. Throughout, Meyers subtly reckons with the considerable gap between Trump’s former negative assessments of these people and his newfound enthusiasm for them. And all we can do in response is blink silently, just like Grimace.
