Game of Thrones Actor Peter Vaughan Dies at 93

Peter Vaughan, the British actor known for playing the role of the blind Maester Aemon on Game of Thrones, has died at 93. Vaughan had a long career in British film and television, including a memorable appearances on the sitcoms Porridge and Citizen Smith, as well as film work in Terry Gilliam’s Brazil and Merchant and Ivory’s The Remains of the Day. He earned a BAFTA nomination for playing Christopher Eccleston’s dementia-stricken father in the 1996 TV drama Our Friends in the North. Vaughan’s agent confirmed the news of his death to the press, writing, “very sadly Peter Vaughan has passed away at approximately 10.30 [GMT] this morning. He died peacefully with his family around him.†Born in 1923, Vaughan served in the British army in World War II before starting his decades-long screen-acting career.
