The witches of WGN’s flagship scripted drama, Salem, will be dissolving their coven at the end the current season. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the network announced today that the third season finale will also serve as the series finale, thus marking the end for WGN’s first original program. Before Salem, WGN had been around for decades airing syndicated shows and sports broadcasts for its Chicago-area viewers, but it jumped into the scripted content game with both feet, rolling out successful shows like Outsiders, glossy period pieces like the slave-rebellion drama Underground, and the atomic-bomb drama Manhattan. Manhattan was critically praised, but the ratings weren’t strong enough to keep it around longer than two seasons, and now that the network is saying farewell to its salacious witch drama, that leaves WGN with just two homegrown shows in its stable. But perhaps it’s a case of out with the old and in with the new. Every network and network-adjacent entity is bulking up with original series right now, and WGN wants to be a prestige player. As Salem exits, the superstation is preparing to roll out its new drama, Debt, while it develops another new series based on the comic book Scalped.
