The wonder of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz — presumptive bestiality, confounding geopolitics, and a gaslighting national leader — can also tread close to the grotesque, and it seems that a certain arbiter of Frank L. Baum’s intellectual property sees things just that way, as the Oz world is getting a full-on horror movie. (Scarier than whatever Emerald City is? Ha. Let it try.) Variety reports that New Line is undertaking the latest adaptation of Baum’s work, using a pitch by screenwriter Mike Van Waes to set a horror film in the technicolor but ultimately troubled (okay, according to Wicked) Oz universe. The project is in its early days, but, friends, the time to start worrying about Toto is now.
