Bill Condon Agrees That Beauty and the Beast’s ‘Exclusively Gay Moment’ Has Been ‘Overblown’

After teasing Beauty and the Beast’s “exclusively gay moment,” Bill Condon is admitting that all of the hype was, well, hype. The director’s phrasing first spiked interest with the revelation that LeFou’s newly official gayness would be evident in “a nice, exclusively gay moment in a Disney movie.” But, as the bit in question is in fact not exclusive, particularly gay, or all that momentous, Condon agrees that undue anticipation has hurt the brief scene. Condon told Screen Crush: “It’s all been overblown … I love the way it plays pure when people don’t know and it comes as a nice surprise.” Instead of scouring the film for the promised moment, Condon would rather audiences “not make a big deal of it. Why is it a big deal?” Well, Bill, some people wait a lifetime.
