There’s an Aussie infiltration happening in horror this year. Greg McLean gave us The Belko Experiment. Sean Byrne debuted his excellent sophomore effort, The Devil’s Candy. And still to come this year we’ll see Hounds of Love from Ben Young, The Killing Ground from Damien Power, and Berlin Syndrome from Cate Shortland, which just got its first trailer. Berlin follows a young Australian girl named Clare who shares a romantic night with a man she meets in Berlin, and wakes up to find that he’s keeping her prisoner in his apartment. It’s a solid jumping-off point for some high-anxiety entrapment horror, and in addition to the demonstrated talents of Shortland, Syndrome has another huge element working in its favor: actress Teresa Palmer. Palmer has been a supporting presence around Hollywood for a handful of years now, but her work fronting last year’s Lights Out is perhaps her best role to date. She’s an understated figure who wears shock and trauma very well, and with Syndrome looking even more harrowing than Lights Out, she’ll get the screen space to deliver an even bigger performance.
