Heavy is the head that wears the crown, sure, but heavier is the head that was supposed to wear the crown … until his dad changed his mind at the last minute. Succession — an HBO drama executive produced by Big Short director Adam McKay and Will Ferrell — follows the drama inside the Roy family, which controls one of the biggest media and entertainment conglomerates in the world. Eldest son Kendall (Jeremy Strong) was all set to take over the empire when patriarch Logan (Brian Cox) decided to stay at the top a little bit longer. It’s not entirely a Murdoch allegory; as creator Jesse Armstrong (In the Loop) explained during the TCAs, the Roys are also inspired by William Randolph Hearst, Robert Maxwell, and Queen Elizabeth. The show’s ten-episode first season will premiere in June. [Full disclosure: New York’s Frank Rich is an executive producer on Succession.]
