Though she’s currently nominated for an Oscar playing a 21st-century American teen in Lady Bird, Saoirse Ronan really built her career on playing melancholy women in period clothing, and doggone it, she’s at it again. In On Chesil Beach, adapted from Ian McEwan’s novel, Ronan plays a young woman who marries a guy who’s surprisingly not a Gleeson (Billy Howle) in the summer of 1962 as they work through “the societal pressure that accompany physical intimacy… leading to an awkward and fateful wedding night.†But will it be any more awkward than that first time Lady Bird and Kyle hooked up? Only time will tell. On Chesil Beach premieres May 18.
