Mean Girls and SpongeBob Lead the 2018 Tony Nominations

It’s the best day ever for big musical adaptations, as SpongeBob and Mean Girls led the Tony nominations this morning, with 12 nominations apiece, with The Band’s Visit close behind with 11. On the play side, the revival of Angels in America smashed through the ceiling with 11 nominations, setting a new record for the most of any play, while Harry Potter and the Cursed Child accio’d a grand total of 10. Hollywood names — including Andrew Garfield, Amy Schumer, Michael Cera, and Denzel Washington — also made appearances, while Tina Fey nabbed a nomination for writing the book for Mean Girls, and a whole slew of songwriters got recognition for writing the songs for SpongeBob. Bruce Springsteen and John Leguizamo, meanwhile, received special Tony Awards. The Smash dream team of Leslie Odom Jr. and Katharine McPhee announced the nominations together this morning, repeatedly mispronouncing the word SpongeBob as Spawngebob. The Tonys will air on CBS on Sunday, June 10 at 8 p.m. Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban, people who are famous outside of Broadway but have also been involved in shows like Waitress and The Great Comet, will host the ceremony together and probably sing a lot.
