We Had to Wonder: How Did Sex and the City Portray Queer People?
Twenty years after the release of HBO’s hit feminist dramedy, Sex and the City remains a trailblazer for sex-positive commentary. However, the show that paved the way for modern comedies like Girls and Broad City didn’t always accurately represent the LGBTQ community. The show both celebrated gay men and reduced them to a stereotype, fetishized “power lesbians,” and minimized relationships between two women. And who could forget the infamous bisexual episode, Sex and the City.
