Hooray, all of our Toy Story friends are back from their latest near-death experience! In the new trailer for Disney’s Toy Story 4, the gang’s all here, but there’s a new addition in a bespoke spork (??) named Forky, who’s flipping out, as well as a new, very Canadian stuntman named Duke Caboom, voiced by the ever-cool Keanu Reeves. As we’ve learned in trailers past, the movie kicks off as Forky, horrified by the very fact of his own existence, goes on the run; Woody chases after him, and then runs into action-hero-mode Bo Peep, who’s taken up residence in an amusement park. Will Woody stay there, or go back to his friends; is this all just a rehash of Toy Story 2? Watch the previous trailer below.
In addition to Forky, voiced by Tony Hale, Disney is also introducing a few other characters in this installment. There’s Gabby Gabby, voiced by Christina Hendricks, “an adorable, talking pull-string doll from the 1950s,†according to a Disney press release, with a defect in her voice box that she longs to fix. She lives in an antique store with a band of voiceless ventriloquist dummies, which is terrifying. There’s Giggle McDimples, voiced by Ally Maki, “a miniature plastic doll from the 1980s†and Bo Peep’s best friend, as well as “the smallest toy in the Toy Story universe.†Finally, there’s Benson, an antique ventriloquist dummy and Gabby Gabby’s right hand. “With no person to give them a voice, these silent toys patrol the antique store with a looming quietness that is inherently unsettling.†Good luck sleeping after this, kids!
Toy Story 4 was originally going to be a romantic comedy about Woody finally getting together with Bo Peep, and was to be written by Rashida Jones and her writing partner Will McCormack. The duo dropped the project because of Pixar’s treatment of women and people of color. See Toy Story 4 in theaters June 21, 2019.
You can watch the previous teasers for Toy Story 4 above and below. The first introduced Forky and the second introduced Ducky (voiced by Keegan-Michael Key) and Bunny (voiced by Jordan Peele), two pals who can’t quite remember Buzz Lightyear’s famous line.
