In early October, after Nick Kroll and I had completed our interview for an episode of my comedy podcast, Good One, we got to talking about Vulture Festival. I said I had an idea for him: He’d do a table read for Big Mouth, the acclaimed animated puberty comedy he co-created, by himself. As in, all of the characters. He paused and was like, “Yeah, I can do that.” So, last month at Vulture Festival Los Angeles, he did!
Anyone who has followed his career knows Kroll’s proven track record as a vocalist, be it on the Comedy Bang! Bang! podcast, Kroll Show, or Big Mouth, where he voices literally dozens of characters, often in the same scene. But the magnitude of Kroll’s voice talent was on full display at Vulture Festival, where it was amazing to watch him quickly bounce from one distinct voice to the next. With a little help from co-creator Andrew Goldberg on stage directions, he read full scenes just interacting with himself. It’s something to behold. So behold it, above!
