Make way, Forever and The Good Place and Russian Doll and Miracle Workers and 87 seasons of Supernatural, the latest comedy about life, death, and the metaphysical is here and it’s got genre cred. Amazon just released the first full-length trailer for its upcoming series Good Omens, based on the beloved Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman novel about a pair of angel and demon buddy cops who join up to find the Antichrist and stop Armageddon because they’re simply having too nice a time on earth. The duo is played by Michael Sheen peroxided to the gods and David Tennant going full-Nightman, so expect charming British bickering and plenty of Tumblr fanfic fuel.
The trailer shows Sheen and Tennant’s characters Aziraphale and Crowley pairing up and taking world-saving orders from the archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm and a pair of purple contact lenses) and also teases a Stranger Things–ish ragtag band of tweens, because when is the Antichrist not an unsettling child with an English accent? At New York Comic Con 2018, Gaiman promised that many of the book’s quirkier aspects, including a pivotal role for the music of Queen, have been translated to the series, and the trailer’s use of “Under Pressure†seems to deliver on the promise. Miranda Richardson, Jack Whitehall, Michael McKean, Frances McDormand (as GOD), and a menagerie of impressive CGI spookies (giant dog! Chernabog!) round out the cast, and Neil Gaiman is acting as showrunner.
Frankly, anything that takes the stance of ‘our world is actually quite nice and worth saving’ in 2019 sounds refreshing and delightful. The six-episode series drops on Amazon Prime on May 31, and you can watch the full trailer above.
