American Horror Story was introduced as an anthology and originally classified as a limited series for awards shows, but the Emmys are making a change. At this year’s ceremony, AHS: Apocalypse will have to compete alongside the regular series contenders, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Over the past eight seasons the Ryan Murphy show has become more and more intertwined, with the entire thing being linked together by common narrative elements — like a regular series. But over the years the “limited†designation has kept it from competing against heavyweights like Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Game of Thrones, and The Handmaid’s Tale. The change will also affect two other shows: the second season of American Vandal (a comedy) and The Sinner (a drama), which will also enter competition as regular series titles.
The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences said in a statement that the reason for the change is “continuing story threads, characters and actors reprising those same character roles from previous seasons.†They added, “This re-categorization is effective for the 71st Emmy Awards competition only.â€
