It turns out that the 72nd Cannes Film Festival won’t get Quentin Tarantino’s hotly anticipated Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, starring Brad Pitt wearing sunglasses and Leonardo DiCaprio’s sideburns. Instead, the lineup was announced Thursday morning with a little victory: The festival will have films by four women in competition for the Palme d’Or, the most since four women-directed movies were in competition in 2011.
The buzzy titles among the slate include Pedro Almodóvar’s Pain and Glory, Xavier Dolan’s Matthias & Maxime, Terrence Malik’s A Hidden Life, Jim Jarmusch’s The Dead Don’t Die, and the Elton John biopic Rocketman.
For Tarantino-heads, there’s still hope. Per Deadline, Cannes artistic director Thierry Frémaux told reporters Thursday morning that it might be added to the lineup when the director is finished editing it. “The Tarantino was not ready. It was abusively and prematurely announced (in the press) which is too bad because it creates an appetite,†he said. “God knows we have the appetite for it, but it’s in a sprint. It’s one of the ones we hope to have good news on, to announce that it will be added.†See the full lineup below:
