If there’s an artist living today whose sound fits in with Game of Thrones’ whole deal better than Florence + the Machine, tell David Benioff and D. B. Weiss now because they have very few episodes left to put their music over the end credits. According to EW, the show’s creators approached Florence Welch to cover “Jenny of Oldstones,†which premiered at the end of Sunday night’s season-eight episode, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.†The tune is a George R.R. Martin original straight from the book series and was sung during the episode by Podrick Payne, Brienne’s squire, on the eve of … well, nothing good, that’s for sure. So, which version is more somber and baleful?
Update, April 22: Sharing an amusing anecdote with the New York Times, Florence Welch admitted that she couldn’t remember receiving an earlier song request from Game of Thrones to record “The Rains of Castamere†a few seasons prior. “Oh my god. [Expletive] Did I? I can’t remember. I think that was during my quote-unquote wild years,†she explained. “If I’m being super honest, there are a lot of things that are a bit blurry. I wasn’t as … involved, or, shall we say, as focused as I am now.†As she rationalizes now, though, “I feel really touched to be on the last season, to be the last singer.â€
