Kenya Barris is off to Netflix, but ABC is really reinvesting in Black-ish. The network announced today that in addition to renewing the hit show for a sixth season, it is also officially going ahead with a spinoff focusing on the younger years of Bow (Tracee Ellis Ross). News of the possible prequel was first reported in February, but ABC has now confirmed that Mixed-ish has a green light and will air next year. (A backdoor pilot episode will air during the next season of Black-ish.) The story will be set in the 1980s and focus on Bow and her family as they move from a hippie compound to the suburbs and navigate the various challenges of that very big transition. Ross is among the executive producers, and Peter Saji will write the script with Barris. Actress Arica Himmell will play little Bow. If Black-ish gets just a few more seasons, they can expand the universe even further and start shipping more of the kids off to college.
