Magic Mike Musical Experiences Bump (and Grind) in the Road As Creative Team Exits

Almost seven years in the making, the Magic Mike musical, based on the Channing Tatum–led film franchise, is currently set to debut in Boston in November. However, writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, composer Tom Kitt, and lyricist Brian Yorkey have reportedly left the show over “creative differences.†The mass exodus happened right before a scheduled developmental workshop of the stage show in New York this week. The lab presentation, a common step in a show’s hypothetical journey to Broadway, was subsequently postponed.

Director Trip Cullman and choreographer Camille A. Brown reportedly remain with the show, which is something of a prequel for Tatum’s character, taking place before the original 2012 Steven Soderbergh film. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a spokesperson for the musical claimed “a new writer-composer team will be announced soon,†so until then … looks like you’ll just have to dance it out.
