James Wan is finally — FINALLY! — stepping into the footsteps of Paul W.S. Anderson and producing a Mortal Kombat movie. Anderson directed the 1995 film that kicked off a slew of cheapies based on video games, but there hasn’t been a Mortal Kombat movie since 1997’s Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. Which, as we all know, was a mash-up of the video-game property and Jeff VanderMeer’s Southern Reach trilogy. Spine-ripping graphics have come such a long way since 1997, so fans are eager to see how gore will be exquisitely rendered this time. No plot details or casting choices have been released, but Deadline is reporting that this new Kombat will be coming to theaters March 5, 2021. Commercial director Simon McQuoid has already begun production in South Australia. Will the warriors of Raiden be protecting the Earthrealm from koalas? Probably not.
