Or now, Meryl Streep quietly taunting Reese Witherspoon with a tasteful crucifix necklace. Such a moment occurs in the show’s second episode (which aired last night), where Streep’s character sizes up her tiny foe. “When I was very young my family just moved and I was going to a brand-new school, and I was especially scared. My father gave me the best advice. He said, ‘Mary Louise, you just scout the bully. Make friends with her,’†she explains. “On your awesome days, I suspect you are a godsend. But on your bad days, decidedly less so.†And what retort does she get in response? Turn up the volume and listen.
