Elizabeth Lederer has resigned from her teaching position at Columbia Law School amid the furor over her role in the Central Park Five case. The debut of Netflix’s When They See Us, written and directed by Ava DuVernay, has renewed the backlash against some of the case’s high-profile figures. Lederer was the prosecutor who tried the case in 1990, and she is portrayed by Vera Farmiga in the miniseries. Though Lederer is still employed with the District Attorney’s Office, she had also been a part-time lecturer at CLS. “I’ve enjoyed my years teaching at CLS, and the opportunity it has given me to interact with the many fine students who elected to take my classes,†Lederer said in a statement. “However, given the nature of the recent publicity generated by the Netflix portrayal of the Central Park case, it is best for me not to renew my teaching application.â€
