Lena Headey Admits She ‘Wanted a Better’ Cersei Death

Only you can decide if Cersei Lannister deserved better on Game of Thrones (we think she did), but her portrayer, Lena Headey, is among those who weren’t too pleased about how things ended for our favorite incestuous queen. And it’s not because of those wigs! In a new Guardian interview, Headey was asked if she has any gripes about Thrones’ divisive final season, especially in regards to her character. “I will say I wanted a better death,†she admitted. “Obviously you dream of your death. You could go in any way on that show. So I was kind of gutted. But I just think they couldn’t have pleased everyone. No matter what they did, I think there was going to be some big comedown from the climb.†Cersei and her brother-lover, Jaime Lannister, wound up meeting their maker thanks to being crushed to death by Red Keep masonry, as opposed to, uh, being stabbed in their stomachs and quickly bleeding to death.

Headey previously admitted her thoughts on Cersei’s death scene were “mixed†at best, as she wanted to have a “big piece or fight†with another character. However, the more she thought about being a casualty of Daenerys’s attack on King’s Landing alongside Jaime, the more she warmed up to the idea. “It seemed like the perfect end for her,†Headey said. “They came into the world together and now they leave together. It’s maybe the first time that Cersei has been at peace.†Also peaceful? Changing your mind.
