Gender pioneer Hugh Grant has become the first man to admit he’s aged out of romantic lead roles. During the Hollywood Reporter’s “Actors Roundtable,†Grant said that he used to have an inferiority complex because he starred in so many rom-coms. “I’ve gotten too old and ugly and fat to do them anymore, so now I’ve done other things and I’ve got marginally less self-hatred,†he told he fellow thespians. Grant said it wasn’t all bad in the rom-com trenches: “I was being paid tons of money. I was very lucky. And most of those romantic comedies I can look squarely in the face — one or two are shockers, but on the whole I can look them in the face and people like them.†One hopes 58 isn’t too old to find love, but it might be too old to kiss the type of starlet usually cast in romantic comedies. So until Hollywood makes Somethings Gotta Give 2: Still Givin’, Grant will just have to remain content with serious fare like Paddington 2.
