It looks like the Television Academy isn’t done shaking things up for this year’s Emmys. The ceremony might already be without a host, and earlier this summer a major crackdown saw a number of performers disqualified from voting over rule violations. Now, Variety is reporting that for the first time in 25 years, the Board of Governors has decided not to even hand out its award this year. The Governors Award is typically given “for outstanding achievement in the arts and sciences or management of television which is either of an accumulative nature or so extraordinary and universal in nature as to go beyond the scope of the Emmy Awards presented in the categories and areas of achievement.â€
William Shatner accepted the award last year on behalf of all of Star Trek, but this year the nominating committee simply decided not to recommend anyone for the honor. Which feels like a very passive-aggressive way to let everyone know none of us were “extraordinary and universal in nature†this year. Ouch. The award has been given out every year since 1978, except for 1993 and 1994, when apparently everyone was also being very mediocre.
