Slave Play, one of the most talked about Off Broadway plays of the last season, will come to Broadway this fall, according to the New York Times, likely to provoke more discussion, more than a little controversy, and probably many, many tweets. Written by recent Yale Drama graduate Jeremy O. Harris, who quickly created buzz this year with both Slave Play and “Daddy,†the play opens amid the psychosexual drama of a plantation in the Old South, and confronts audiences with questions about the entwined history of race and sexuality. Robert O’Hara directs the production, last seen at New York Theatre Workshop (where Madonna showed up to see it), and it starred Ato Blankson-Wood, James Cusati-Moyer, Sullivan Jones, Irene Sofia Lucio, Annie McNamara, Paul Alexander Nolan, Teyonah Parris, and Chalia La Tour, though the Broadway cast has not been announced.
The Broadway production of Slave Play is set to start performances at the John Golden Theatre September 10, and open October 6 and run for 17 weeks. The production’s producers have announced plans to make 10,000 tickets to the show available for only $39, significantly lower than most Broadway prices, in order to make it more accessible.
