You know how you’re allowed to call your little brother a “dingus,†but nobody else is? That’s pretty much how George Lucas feels about the Star Wars franchise, according to Comicbook.com. Some parts of it may be bad, but at least they’re his bad stories. That is, until Disney came along with pockets larger than the Challenger Deep. Bob Iger, CEO of the Walt Disney Company, divulged in his new book, The Ride of a Lifetime: Lessons Learned From 15 Years as CEO of the Walt Disney Company, that Lucas low-key hates the current trilogy. He’d much rather have the story lines that he wrote and gave to Disney along with Lucasfilm, like the tale of Kira, a female Jedi Padawan who trains with grumpy exile Luke Skywalker.
Instead, J.J. Abrams, Kathleen Kennedy (Lucasfilm’s president), and Iger blindsided Lucas with the new plot. “Now, in the first meeting with him about the future of Star Wars, George felt betrayed, and while this whole process would never have been easy for him, we’d gotten off to an unnecessarily rocky start,†Iger writes in the book, recounting that the filmmaker was “upset†and “disappointed.†There was no formal agreement that Disney would use Lucas’s stories, but Iger felt bad for surprising him with the news. The whole thing is perfect fodder for both sequel-trilogy haters and prequel-trilogy stans. If it didn’t get Lucas’s blessing, is it really canon? Let the debates begin.
