Charli XCX and Troye Sivan’s New Song Is, Like, So ‘2099’

Charli XCX’s A&R must be the hardest working team in the industry. Her upcoming album features Lizzo, Clairo, Yaeji, Christine and the Queens, Sky Ferreira, Kim Petras, Haim, Cupcakke, Brooke Candy, Pabllo Vittar, Big Freedia, Tommy Cash, and, now, Troye Sivan, for the second time. Their new song, “2099,†is an aggressive and futuristic track, transporting listeners to what the “Billboard Hot 100†might sound like in 80 years. Unclear what the rest of the world is like (how did the ol’ climate disaster go?), but according to the lyrics, NASCAR still exists, so that’s an indication. This song is 3008, and all the other pop songs out right now are so 2000 and late. No offense, Jack Antonoff. Troye Sivan and Charli XCX reunite on this track, after October’s “1999.†You see what they did there. Both songs will be featured on Charli XCX’s upcoming LP, Charli, out in just four days, on September 13.
