SNL’s ‘Mid-Day News’ Turns Local Crime Reports Into a Fierce Competition

Aside from the introduction of an instant-classic Bowen Yang character and an excellent opening monologue about psychopaths and Hot Priest, Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s SNL episode featured another sketch (written by Michael Che, Ego Nwodim, and Chris Redd) that’s well worth the watch. In “Mid-Day News,†Waller-Bridge joins cast members Kenan Thompson, Nwodim, and Alex Moffat as anchors on a local-news show (with Redd appearing as the weatherman). They start taking turns predicting, then reporting the races of various crime suspects, which quickly turns into a heated black vs. white competition. Come for Waller-Bridge saying “This is ridiculous — no one’s keeping score†in an American accent, but stay for a hyped-up Chris Redd shouting — while keeping score of the very close race — “That’s okay, we still tied up, baby! We tied up! Let’s go!!†Redd’s delivery even makes the eternally professional Kenan Thompson break, and that’s saying something.
