Good news: Despite how many productions and events have been canceled in this terrible horrible year, the 72nd annual Primetime Emmy Awards are still happening! Bad news: Literally everything else in the world! So let’s focus on the good. The 2020 nominees are surprising, deserving, and diverse. Zendaya for Euphoria. Paul Mescal for Normal People. So much love for Schitt’s Creek and The Baby Yoda and Friends Fun-Time Show (a.k.a. The Mandalorian) and *ahem* television’s best show, What We Do in the Shadows. Thanks to the power of social distancing and a team of remote camera operators, these nominees will be able to get their due with a proper ceremony, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and everything.
This year’s Primetime Emmy Awards will air on Sunday, September 20 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. They are scheduled to go until 11 p.m. ET, but knowing how long awards shows normally run, and how gaffe-prone these live Zoom-in events can be (remember the Sondheim birthday stream?) who knows how long it’ll run. If you’re a cord-cutter, you can stream the ceremony on ABC using a service like Hulu Live, Sling TV, or YouTube TV. And even though stars will be beaming in remotely, there’s still going to be red carpet pre-show programming before the event, although we can’t fathom what that’s going to look like. E! will air countdown programming beginning at 4:30 p.m. ET, with the red carpet show beginning at 6. And cord-cutters will be able to enjoy “PEOPLE & Entertainment Weekly Red Carpet Live: At Home!†on people.com and ew.com beginning at 7 p.m. ET. We can’t wait to see how they pull it off.
