In a move that would bring a tear to Papa Borat’s eye, Maria Bakalova was one of the first winners at Sunday’s Critics’ Choice Awards, taking home Best Supporting Actress for her turn as the infamous journalist’s intrepid daughter Tutar, in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. Best Supporting Actor, meanwhile, went to Daniel Kaluuya for his work as Fred Hampton in Judas and the Black Messiah, and Minari breakout star Alan Kim tearfully received the award for Best Young Actor or Actress. Minari also took home the evening’s prize for Best Foreign Language Film.
The night’s leading cinematic winners, as you might have assumed, were Chloé Zhao and her film Nomadland, which took home Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Cinematography. Emerald Fennell’s Promising Young Woman won Best Original Screenplay, while its lead, Carey Mulligan, received Best Actress. This year’s Best Actor award, meanwhile, went posthumously to the late Chadwick Boseman for his role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
As for this year’s television awards, The Crown reigned supreme as Best Drama Series, with Josh O’Connor, Gillian Anderson, and Emma Corrin all taking home acting accolades. Ted Lasso, meanwhile, landed Best Comedy Series, as well as Best Actor in a Comedy Series for Jason Sudeikis and Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Hannah Waddingham. The Queen’s Gambit, meanwhile, took home Best Limited Series. See the rest of the evening’s winners below.
