Mike Mills has been getting asked a lot about working with preteen actor Woody Norman in his new film, Câmon Câmon. âI had to do Q&As, like, âWas it hard working with a child actor?ââ the writer-director said at a Vulture Festival panel about the film, alongside Norman. âI was like, âYou have no idea how un-childlike this person is. And how childish Joaquin [Phoenix] and Gaby [Hoffman] are!ââ Norman backed Mills up with an example involving Phoenix, who plays his uncle and guardian. âWhen we were doing the chemistry read â I donât know if I should say this â I knew the lines, he didnât,â Norman dished. To Phoenixâs credit, Mills added, he didnât âeven know if heâs doing the movie reallyâ at that point. âWoodyâs got all his lines memorized, and Joaquinâs kind of looking at the sides,â Mills explained. âAnd Joaquin just improvised the line, and Woodyâs like, âOh, Iâm sorry, thatâs not the line.â Itâs like, Oh! God. Buckle up, be prepared.â
Norman added that Phoenix âis so weirdâ â in a good way, of course; the two quickly found a rapport while filming, and Phoenix respected Norman as an actor. âI remember the first time I showed Joaquin little cuts of scenes,â Mills said. âHe comes in after a scene, and goes, âThat little fucker! He is so good. That little fuck!â And at the end of the shoot, Norman joked to Phoenix, âIâve been carrying you this whole film!â Mills also remembered the moment: âIt makes Joaquin fall over, laughing,â he said. âBut I also, as a director, I knew, This is gold. They have secrets, they have their own world, their own communication, their own like thriving hive little thing for themselves.â See it for yourselves when Câmon Câmon hits theaters on November 19.
