It all happened so fast. Off the back of their anthology albumâs release in June 2022, BTS shared a prerecorded dinner with fans. Amid a delicious-looking display of shrimp and meat and side dishes, the boys announced that they were taking a break from making music as a group to pursue solo projects. When we look back, the announcement wasnât surprising â BTS spent the past decade living and making music together, so a break to find their own personal sounds and stories was perhaps overdue. But in the immediate aftermath of the announcement, the news of BTSâs break elicited a kind of hysteria: Hybeâs stocks tanked (this would be BTSâs management company), many observers speculated that the âhiatusâ would look like One Directionâs (namely, BTS would never return as a group), and fans began to plan for their lives without constant updates from the Tannies (some resolved to work on themselves).
The dinner was a harbinger of an announcement that led many to self-identify as a military wife: BTS is now on a three-year hiatus to complete mandatory service. Off the heels of their October concert to promote Busanâs bid for the 2030 World Expo, the band announced their intention to serve in the military sequentially until a planned reunion in 2025. (Korean men are required to begin their 18-month service by the time they turn 28, though BTS was granted a two-year extension for their cultural achievements.) Jin, who turned the big 3-0 in December 2022, was the first member to enlist.
Their promise to continue making music both as a group and as soloists wasnât empty. BTS announced that they will renew contracts with their label, Hybeâs Big Hit Music, agreeing to work with the company on their future releases from 2025 onwards. Big Hit Music passed a board resolution to sign exclusive agreements with the members sequentially, a press release stated on September 20. Those currently serving in the military will begin activities under the new contract when they return. âWith the renewal of their contracts, we are looking forward to supporting BTSâ group activities expected in 2025,â the company said in a statement. âHYBE and BIGHIT MUSIC will provide all support necessary to continue to expand and elevate BTSâ presence.â
In December 2023, a year after Jin first began his mandatory military service, RM, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook officially enlisted, meaning that the entire group have become active service members. That doesnât mean theyâve completely disappeared, though. As expected, BTS has continued to release prerecorded content ahead of their expected return in 2025. Below, a handy list of their group and solo activities thus far, including Jungkookâs new single, âNever Let Go,â Jimin and Jungkookâs new travel show, and RMâs new collab with Megan Thee Stallion.
Jimin
Jimin and Jungkook taped a travel show together, before both boys enlisted for their compulsory military service. They traveled to New York state, Jeju Island in South Korea, and Sapporo in Japan. The show, titled Are You Sure?!, premiered on Disney+ August 8, 2024. Episodes drop on Thursdays until the finale in September. BigHit dropped a trailer on X on July 2.
Just because heâs in the service, it doesnât mean Jimin has stopped serving. On June 17, he announced his second solo project, Muse. The seven-track album will arrive on July 19, just a year and four months after his debut album hit the ARMY streets hard. It will feature songs that âdocument his journey to find the source of his inspirationâ and showcase his âexpanded musical spectrum,â according to the press release. His prerelease single, âCloser Than This,â which dropped in December 2023 as a gift to fans, will appear on the album. The lyrics are full of references to BTS and ARMYs, and the music video includes old footage of the band from throughout their career. Ultimately, he asks fans not to worry, assuring them, âBaby, Iâll come back to you.â
Previously, after months of lying in wait for Jiminâs album announcement, the label confirmed that his solo debut album, Face, would arrive on March 24, 2023. BTSâs Instagram account gave us a taste of what was in store on February 21. âReflection of vulnerable minds and unexposed wounds,â the text, titled âCircle of Resonance,â read. âWaves originated from the deepest invisible inner world, pass through the face on the surface and reach others to resonate while transmitting the inner voice.â A video dropped an hour later, confirming the albumâs title and release date. We fall into a dark, watery abyss in the 35-second-clip, only to find ourselves suddenly above a still pink pool as water droplets fall onto the surface.
He had studio sessions with damn near every producer under the sun to make the record. Jimin has met with frequent Ye collaborator Hudson Mohawke, TBHits and Mr. Franks (the engineers behind Ariana Grandeâs biggest hits), and Taylor Hill, to name a few. He was also pictured recording with a full choir overseen by musician Duane Benjamin days before âWAPâ mastermind Ayo the Producer followed Jimin on Instagram (are we getting âChurch Girl (Jiminâs Version)â?
In an interview with Weverse Magazine in June 2022, Jimin said his solo album would be ârawâ and âexplicit.â âI just think I can show something a little more raw about me. That might include a more mature side, too, but what Iâm really interested in is showing something closer to my real, personal rawness directly in a format like music or music videos,â he says. âI want to be better and cooler.â
In the run-up to Jiminâs solo studio debut, the âSerendipityâ singer got to live out his wildest dreams. He featured on Taeyangâs R&B track âVibe,â making good use of his honey falsetto on the smooth track that dropped January 13. âTaeyang is an idol to me,â he told W Korea in a cover story, which arrived in January, the same month Dior made him its brand ambassador and sent him to its Paris Fashion Week show. âYou can say that working with him is one of the goals that Iâve been longing for. Ever since I was young, Iâve followed his career and learned a lot from him ⌠Working with him made me realize that I want to be an artist who is an amazing singer as well as a performer.â
J-Hope
Everyone: did you have a happy Hobiuary? During J-to-the-íŹë§âs birthday month this year, Hybe announced that he would be releasing a six-track âspecial album,â Hope on the Street Vol. 1, on March 29. The full tracklist is stacked with features, including bandmate Jungkook, and labelmate Yunjin from Le Sserafim, plus Benny Blanco, Nile Rodgers, Gaeko, Yoon Mirae, and Jinbo the SuperFreak.
Songs from the release were also featured in the accompanying Prime Video docuseries Hope on the Street, which tracks his journey as a dancer and sees him meeting street dancers from around the world. The first of six episodes dropped on March 28, 2024 with weekly releases on Thursdays and Fridays.
Itâs not his first documentary project. On February 17, 2023, J-Hope released J-Hope in the Box on Disney+, which chronicled the making of his first studio album and the promotions that went along with it. (In July 2022, he jumped out the box with a new album, Jack in the Box.) The documentaryâs release might have signaled the end of the rapperâs first solo era, but that didnât mean he was going off the grid. J-Hope made his Paris Fashion Week debut at three separate F/W 2023 shows â Louis Vuitton, Dior (with Jimin), and Hermès â perhaps kicking off some fashion-related globe-trotting.
Prior to the documentaryâs debut, J-Hope capped off 2022 with multiple musical appearances. He performed a medley of songs for Ryan Seacrestâs New Yearâs Rockinâ Eve in Times Square: âEqual Sign,â âChicken Noodle Soup,â and âButter (Holiday Remix).â He also did his rounds at Korean awards shows, performing an intricately staged, large-scale rendition of âMore,â âArson,â and âFutureâ at the MAMA Awards on November 30.
The rapper featured on Crushâs âRush Hour,â a groovy hip-hop track dropped on September 24. Along with the song came a â90s-inspired music video with exuberant choreography (obviously, the dance aficionado expertly hit every step). The virtuoso made his solo stage debut at Lollapalooza Hobipalooza on July 31, 2022 an hour-long showcase of his skills as a seasoned entertainer, performing tracks from Jack in the Box, his mixtape Hope World, and various BTS albums.
J-Hope then announced his official enlistment for mandatory military service, per his record label. While he was in the process of enrollment, music was still a priority; his single âon the streetâ dropped on March 3, 2023, just over a month before he enlisted on April 18.
Suga
Suga and his alter ego Agust D are coming to a theater near you. On March 5, Hybe announced the worldwide release of SUGA | Agust D Tour âD-Dayâ the Movie on April 10 and 13. The concert film chronicled Sugaâs past year of performances, including three encore shows in Seoul. His solo tour was previously announced on February 14, 2023 as a Valentineâs Day gift to me. He made history as the first BTS member to embark on a tour alone, but more importantly, as the first member to hit the stage, in Hannah Montana fashion, as two people at once. Did he have a wig to differentiate between Suga and Agust D? Unfortunately not!
After his tour, Suga became the third BTS member to enlist. BIGHIT announced on August 7 that Suga has begun the process of enlisting, by terminating his postponement. He enlisted September 22, 2023, per Billboard.
Before the tour announcement, the âDaechwitaâ rapper also made his Paris Fashion Week debut at Valentinoâs couture show last month after being named a brand ambassador. His other ambassadorship? An unofficial partnership with the NBA. The league invited him to Japan for a game last year, where he got to kick it with the Golden State Warriors and look tiny.
In April 2023, we finally got an update on his musical output. Sugaâs first solo record, D-Day, came out April 21. Itâs technically not Sugaâs album, since D-Day is credited to Agust D.
In the meantime, he hosted a talk show where he provides the food and atmosphere while the guest provides the alcohol. Suchwita airs on their YouTube channel, BangtanTV. Guests thus far include Hoshi from the K-pop boy group Seventeen, Big Bang member Taeyang, bandmate RM, and more.
RM
Megjoon nation, rise. On September 1, Megan Thee Stallion announced that RM would feature on her song âNeva Play.â âThis is one of my favorite RM verses Iâve heard! Iâve never heard him rap in this style before đ,â she teased in a post sharing the singleâs artwork. In the music video for the collab, which dropped September 6, an animated version of RM raps, âFor Asia, man, we paved the way.â Judging by the reaction to his deep voice alone, maybe a 3-D appearance wouldâve been too much.
RM will also be the subject of a solo documentary titled RM: Right People, Wrong Place, which will have its world premiere during the âopen cinemaâ part of the 29th Busan International Film Festival. (The exact date has not yet been announced, but the festival is scheduled to run from October 2 to 11.) It will release in theaters globally later this year. The film will delve into the making of RMâs second studio album Right Place, Wrong Person, which was released on May 24, a few months after he formally began his military service. He kicked off the album cycle with a music video for the final song on the album, âCome Back to Me.â
Along with the album, he dropped a âLOST!â music video that was very much giving Severance vibes. Maybe heâs also waiting for season two.
Two years ago, after months of teasing new music with unsubtle pics of album files and Logic Pro screenshots, RM released his ten-track debut solo album, Indigo, on December 2, 2022. âIndigo recounts the stories and experiences RM has gone through, like a diary,â a press release states. He kicked off his colorful new era with a music video for âWild Flower,â which features youjeen (also known as Cherry filter vocalist Jo Yujin). NPR also booked him for a Tiny Desk concert, which premiered the same day the album dropped.
âIâve worked hard on it for four years,â RM said of the album on November 10, 2022 per a fan translation. âItâs very different from my previous works, and fun people are included in it.â The full tracklist features Erykah Badu, Anderson .Paak, Tablo, Paul Blanco, Mahalia, Kim Sawol, youjeen, Colde, and Park Jiyoon. Despite fan predictions, Pharrell was not one of the fun people in question. Pharrell previously said he wanted to make a song for RMâs album in the duoâs Rolling Stone âMusicians on Musiciansâ interview (the producer already cut a different track with the group for his own upcoming album, Phriends). Others had speculated that Jungkook and J-Hope would also make an appearance, alongside Korean R&B singer BIBI, but none of them showed.
Another RM solo release arrived in September of that year, when he featured on alternative K-pop group Balming Tigerâs hip-hop track âSexy Nukim.â (âNukimâ means âfeelingâ in Korean ⌠We suggest you watch the many angles of RMâs first live performance of the song, where he embodies the trackâs ethos to a terrifying degree.) He previously released two solo mixtapes â mono in 2018 and RM in 2015. Meanwhile, heâs slated to host the Korean variety show The Dictionary of Useless Human Knowledge, where the showâs expert panelists discuss literature, physics, forensics, and astronomy. It aired weekly beginning December 2, 2022.
Oh, and aside from all that, heâs still doing art things.
The art philanthropistâslashâinfluencer was named one of 35 innovators in the art scene by Artnet in 2022. âRM, the leader of global K-pop sensation BTS, has made no secret of his love for art,â reads his introduction. âHeâs an avid collector, buying works by Korean artists [âŚ] Heâs also a savvy art patron with an enormous reach on social media, inspiring droves of BTS fans to seek out exhibitions ranging from the Museum of Fine Arts, Bostonâs Philip Guston show to presentations of traditional Korean white porcelain moon jars in Hong Kong and Korea.â
Jungkook
In honor of BTSâs 11th-anniversary celebration, Jungkook released âNever Let Goâ on June 7, a house-inspired ode to fans. âAnd when the days gĐľt longer / You fill my world with wonder,â he sings in the pre-chorus over bright synth beats, asking ARMY to remain by his side. âEverybody needs somebody / You been that somebody / So stay with me and keep holding on.â
Jungkook announced his first studio album on October 3, making him the fourth member to release a full project in 2023 alone. Golden takes its title from his nickname, golden maknae, or âgolden youngestâ in English. It features 11 tracks, including prerelease singles âSEVENâ and â3D.â The album dropped on November 3.
The youngest was the first to release a track in the post-BTS-break world, and the first member and first Korean to perform at the World Cupâs opening ceremony on November 20, 2022 debuting a new single, âDreamers.â âProud to announce that Jungkook is part of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Soundtrack & will perform at the World Cup opening ceremony. Stay tuned!â BTS said on Twitter. While fans expressed their pride for the 25-year-old pop star, some online found the decision to participate in the event controversial due to Qatarâs human-rights record, which includes criminalizing homosexuality. Days after Jungkook was added to the slate, Dua Lipa said she refused to perform at the event and looks âforward to visiting Qatar when it has fulfilled all the human rights pledges.â
Earlier that summer, Jungkook featured on Charlie Puthâs summer earworm âLeft and Right,â singing about how he canât get a vague lover out of his head because they âdid things to me that I just canât forget.â The song is cute and very fun to drive to. The music video is the second one to depict Jungkook both getting hit by a car and perhaps having a gay lover.
Jin
Fresh off the release of his first solo single, âThe Astronaut,â on October 28, 2022 â the song earned Jin his first solo Hot 100 hit, debuting at No. 51, along with a top spot on Billboardâs Digital Song Sales chart â the eldest started working the variety-show circuit. He made appearances on Running Man, Halmyungsoo, and rapper Young-jiâs talk show Nothing Much Prepared (the latter gets chaotic and real about the cost of fame ⌠plus, the host passes out drunk in the bathroom, so Jin has to close the show alone). He also became the spokesperson for the ramen brand Jin Ramen in November 2022. Youâd think he would have already earned that gig, but, yeah, his dream collab only just came true.
Jin also hosted a new variety show with famous Korean chef Baek Jong-won. The series is centered on two things: making alcohol and eating food, with special guests and random activities sprinkled in to keep it spicy. Jinâs Traditional Alcohol Journey premiered November 12, 2022 on BTSâs YouTube channel.
Before leaving for the military on December 13, 2022 to complete his mandatory service, Jin got the ball rolling on plans to distribute the alcohol he learned how to make in the variety show with the famous chef. âJin is preparing a brewery under his name,â Baek said in an interview with OSEN. âHeâs been filling oak casts with alcohol, which should be ready to drink by the time heâs discharged from the military. I want to add oak scents and flavors to soju, similar to whisky. Thereâs no official name of this drink weâre creating just yet.â
V
The cool shade stunner dropped a new digital single, âFri(end)s,â on March 15. Itâs described as a pop soul R&B track with all-English lyrics, and V dropped a short film ahead of the music video release.
In his first music video appearance of 2024, V starred in IUâs latest music video, âLove Wins All,â to tug at our heartstrings. They play a couple whoâs surviving in a post-apocalyptic world together while still trying to create happy memories in their imagination.
V previously collaborated with UMI on âwherever u r,â dropped as a gift to us on his 28th birthday on December 30, 2023. That year, he also released a vibey solo album just in time for the fall. Layover dropped on September 8, 2023. A music video accompanied each song on the six-track album, starting with lead single âLove Me Again.â
V also had a starring role in a new variety series. Jinnyâs Kitchen takes Taehyung and his famous friends, Park Seo-joon (Itaewon Class), Choi Woo-shik (Parasite), and Jung Yu-mi (Kim Ji-young: Born 1982), to Mexico, where they open up a Korean eatery run by popular actor Lee Seo-jin. Everyone except the BTS member has participated in showâs previous iterations â Minariâs Youn Yuh-Jung used to run shops in Spain and Bali for Younâs Kitchen and a traditional hotel for Younâs Stay â so naturally, the green pop star is the intern-slash-dishwasher for Leeâs establishment. It hit Amazon Prime Video weekly starting February 24, 2023.
Before Jinnyâs Kitchen, V landed on the cover of Vogue Korea in September 2022, teasing music that would show a new side of the artist. âI want to present a kind of music that Iâve never tried before, something that sets apart from the style BTSâs V has shown,â he told the magazine. âBeing able to pursue oneâs own music style lights the passion and enthusiasm in us. Thatâs what keeps us in love with what we do.â Though nothing has been confirmed, outlets report his debut solo album will arrive sometime next year (Taeâs been teasing his solo stuff for a while, but has admittedly deleted everything that doesnât make the cut).
Over the summer, he featured in Disney +âs In the Soop: Friendcation, a variety show that follows a four-day friendcation to a seaside town with Choi Woo-shik, Park Seo-joon, Park Hyung-sik (Strong Woman Do Bong Soon), and musician Peakboy. The show premiered on July 22, 2022.
The rumor mill also teases a return to acting â he had a part in the K-drama Hwarang: The Warrior Poet in 2016 â though thereâs really been no confirmations in that department. People really wanted to see him in Squid Game 2.
BTS
BTS is back! Through archival footage and interviews, anyway. The group released an eight-part documentary on Disney + tracking their ten year journey on December 20, 2023. According to Disney, BTS Monument: Beyond the Star includes âa vast library of music and footage over the past nine years,â as well as âthe daily lives, thoughts, and plans of BTS members, as they prepare for their second chapter.â In the months prior, the seven-piece added author to their rĂŠsumĂŠ by releasing a book titled Beyond The Story: 10-Year Record of BTS on July 9. Written by the band and journalist Myeongseok Kang, itâs an oral history of the making of the group over the ten years theyâve been together. However, if youâre not a reader, as part of a deal between Hybe and Disney, BTS released a 4K concert film, BTS: Permission to Dance on Stage â LA, tied to their November 2021 show in Los Angeles.
Despite announcing a hiatus, BTS continues to release music as a group. Most recently, they commemorated their 10th anniversary in June 2023 by gifting fans with the single âTake Two.â The month prior, the band also created the theme song for the Korean animated film Bastions titled âThe Planet,â marking their first official song since 2022.
In August 2022, the bandâs vocal line (Jungkook, V, Jimin, and Jin) released a track with Snoop Dogg and Benny Blanco, âBad Decisions.â
This is a developing story.
