Check in on your local film bro this morning. The 2023 Academy Award nominees were announced January 24 by two former Girls co-stars, Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams (we assume as part of the Girls resurgence). Going into the ceremony, The Fabelmans, Everything Everywhere All at Once, and The Banshees of Inisherin had the wind at their backs following successful showings at precursor ceremonies such as the Golden Globes and the guild awards of SAG and the DGA, among others. All three of those movies did well, especially EEAAO, which got the most nominations with 11. Those include a twin set of Best Supporting Actress nominations for Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu, along with nominations for Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, and writers/directors/weirdos the Daniels.
Andrea Riseborough, star of To Leslie, managed to snag her first nomination after basically a week of campaigning for Best Lead Actress. Brian Tyree Henry is also celebrating his first nom, for Best Supporting Actor in Causeway. This year’s Oscars will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel on Sunday, March 12, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles and broadcast live on ABC. Below, the full list of nominations.
