2023 emmys in 2024

The 2023 Emmy Awards Winners

There’s been an awards season event every day this past week: first, the rumor-starting Golden Globes on Sunday, January 7; the Mean Girls premiere on Monday; the diet Oscars on the ninth; the rumors being squashed by Wednesday. Then there was the dinner celebrating the invention of the year-end lists on Thursday, followed by a luncheon on Friday just to make sure the same group of people have a rare chance to catch up for the fourth time in one week. And because we like to honor our celebrities while they’re the most hungover and probably grumpy, the Emmy Awards air today, January 15. Talk about a marathon of either adulation or disappointment at losing the award you painstakingly spent six years learning how to conduct for … oh, wait, that’s a film thing. The Emmys are TV’s biggest night. Anthony Anderson of Black-ish fame MCs the ceremony. At least they didn’t add insult to injury and make a non–John Mulaney comedian host it.

Delayed due to the concurrent Hollywood strikes of 2023, this year’s ceremony honors all the shows that made last year’s television offerings worth watching. The Bear won Outstanding Comedy Series plus Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach each earned their first wins, setting them up for an interesting 2024 Emmys. Succession’s final season ended the night winning Outstanding Drama Series, on top of acting wins for Sarah Snook, Kieran Culkin, and Matthew Macfadyen. You can take the HBO out the Max, but you can’t take the HBO-branded-shows-sweeping-Emmy noms out of the network. As for regular ol’ broadcast TV, Abbott Elementary did the thing, making star and creator Quinta Brunson the first Black woman in 40 years to win Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy. Below, all the winners of the 75th Emmy Awards. Kisses from Daddy all around.
